Tension is a conceptual editorial project that explores how everyday wellness and beauty products feed into our sense of insecurity.
The project began with an observation: kombucha and makeup—two products often marketed as self-care—serve opposite purposes. Kombucha is consumed to improve “inner beauty” or gut health, while makeup enhances outward appearance. Yet both suggest that something about us needs fixing or improving.
This led us to examine the language of consumer packaging in stores—words like glow, healthy, sleep, beauty—promising transformation, often by amplifying the very insecurities they claim to solve.
Through layered visuals, disrupted beauty ad aesthetics, and fragmented typography, the book invites viewers to question:
Are we buying these products for self-care—or because we've been made to feel we're not enough without them?
